The Aran Islands

We departed Galway on Friday morning for the Aran Islands.  We took a ferry to the largest of the Aran Islands, Inishmore.  There are just over 800 inhabitants here, and Irish is still their first language!  It was very cool being in such an old-timers place.

A guide bus drove us around the island, showing us the many beautiful views and beaches.  It was such an isolated area, and so peaceful.  I loved being back by the salt air, I am definitely a beach gal!

Our tour guide dropped us off for a very light lunch of soup and sandwiches at the base of Dún Aonghasa, where we walked to after eating.  This is an old Bronze Age fort, that is absolutely massive.  It is at the top of a cliff, so a little bit of a hike up there, but once there, the views were incredible.  There are no barriers between you and the cliff.  It is just open air surrounded by stone and water.  This place was gorgeous, and it was so hard to believe that I was actually up there, it didn't seem like real life!

After heading down from the fort, we had an early dinner.  I got fish and chips and an apple pie, it definitely hit the spot!  We then went to the Aran Island Sweater Mill.  It was a fun little touristy stop before getting back on the ferry to head back towards the mainland.

The ferry ride was only about an hour, and then we hopped on the bus towards Cork.  It was a long day of travel, and we got home around 10 pm.  I was ready to crash!

This weekend was an overall great time.  It is hard to believe I am actually living is such an amazing, historical place!

Now that Early Start is done, classes start monday!

Be back soon!

XO,

Caitlin
